Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the absorption of dietary fat. This bile acid is a byproduct of your intestinal bacteria.
It is also known as deoxycholate and cholanoic acid.
When injected into subcutaneous fat, deoxycholic acid destroys adipocytes (fat cells). The inflammatory tissue reaction leads to a reduction in fat aka lipolysis.
Results are seen after 4 weeks. Repeat treatment is then done after 4 weeks after each session as necessary. Fat is permanently destroyed in the treatment area.
Total sessions vary person to person depending on the fullness of the treatment area. A minimum of 2-3 sessions are usually recommended while some may need up to 5 sessions.
Avoid blood thinning products ~1 week prior: aspirin (if safe to), Advil, Motrin, Aleve, vitamin E, St. John's wort, gingko, evening primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, Omega-3 supplements, alcohol. Consult with your family physician if any of these area safe to hold.
